Two logins, and nobody tells you which is which
Aspen runs your records and your classroom in different systems, on different addresses. New students routinely spend their first week looking for coursework in the place that only holds their bill.
The split
Almost every complaint about “not being able to find anything” at Aspen traces back to this one piece of architecture. It is not hidden, but it is never introduced either.

How a course is actually shaped
Aspen's rhythm is unusual among online nursing schools and it is worth understanding before you commit, because it decides what a normal week looks like for you.

The words Aspen uses, and what they mean
Every school has a private vocabulary, and misreading it costs people terms. These are the ones that catch new Aspen students out.
- The Classroom
- Not a metaphor and not a video call. It is the D2L Brightspace site at classroom.aspen.edu where your course actually lives. “Log into the classroom” means this, not the portal.
- Student Portal
- my.aspen.edu. Records, registration and money. Support staff say “portal” and “classroom” as if the difference is obvious; to a new student it is not.
- MPP
- The Monthly Payment Plan. It appears in correspondence as an acronym long before anyone spells it out. It is a private education loan at 0%, and approval requires a soft credit inquiry and a minimum 600 TransUnion score.
- Term
- At Aspen a term is the 8-week course window, not a semester. When a form asks which term you are registering for, it means which 8-week block.
- Post-licensure
- Programmes for people who already hold an RN licence — the RN to BSN, MSN, bridge and DNP. Distinct from the closed pre-licensure BSN, which trained people to become nurses. The distinction matters more than any other on this site.
- DEAC
- The Distance Education Accrediting Commission, Aspen's institutional accreditor. National rather than regional, which is a portability question rather than a quality one.
- CCNE
- The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, which accredits the nursing programmes themselves. This is the one your state board and your employer are looking for, and Aspen holds it.
What the portal will not tell you
Two things you have to ask for rather than find. Your transfer credit assessment is not automatic, and every credit it grants shortens the number of monthly payments you make. And your practicum arrangements, on the graduate routes, are yours to secure — no system will surface a site or preceptor for you.
Common questions
Does Aspen use Blackboard or Canvas?
Neither. Aspen's online classroom runs on D2L Brightspace, at classroom.aspen.edu. It is separate from the student portal at my.aspen.edu, which holds records and billing.
How long are Aspen University courses?
Courses run 8 weeks with assignments due throughout. Students may take up to three at once, though most take one or two, and new courses start on alternating Tuesdays each month.
Does Aspen have discussion boards?
Yes. Discussion boards are part of the online classroom experience, so peer posting and replies are built into the weekly workload rather than optional.
When do Aspen grades post?
Aspen states you receive a final course grade within seven business days of the course ending. Because the next course can open sooner than that, plan your registration without waiting for it.
